Longest defensive system worldwide - Międzyrzecz Fortified Region

Międzyrzecz Fortified Region

     A complex of wartime fortifications ordered by Hitler and built in 1934-38.Bunkers with steel tops are interconnected by underground corridors and form what is believed to be the longest defensive system worldwide. Guided tours are offered through the underground tunnels. Thanks to its microclimate, it has become a bat reserve, Nietoperek, that offers shelter to approximately 30,000 bats. >>>>


Cistercian abbey - Gościkowo-Paradyż

     The Gothic Cistercian abbey built in the 14th century and enlarged in the 18th century in late-baroque style. Richly ornamented baroque and neoclassical interiors. Two cloister garths, an alter from 1739 and a Gothic fresco (15th c.) are worth visitor's attention. Today it houses a seminary.


Castle of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem - Łagów Lubuski

Lagow Lubuski

     A holiday spot picturesquely set between two lakes of the Łagów Lakeland. A Polish stronghold in the Middle Ages and a commandery of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem in 1347-1810, who raised a castle here in the 14th century. It was enlarged in the 17th and 19th centuries. One-pillar Gothic vaulted hall on the ground level. A splendid panoramic view from the medieval castle tower. The summer film festival is organized in the amphitheatre on the lakefront. >>>>


Wine-harvest Feast - Zielona Góra

     The town lies on the historical Wrocław - Szczecin route.Zielona Góra The Old Town Square contains a formerly wooden town hall with slightly leaning tower, which received a neoclassical appearance during remodeling works carried out in the 17th and 19th centuries. Originally Gothic St Hedwig's Church was reshaped in neo-classical style and has a neo- Romantic organ and Renaissance and baroque tombstones. The former Protestant church (18th c.) is a half-timber building with brick tower. The city holds the feast of the grape harvest in September. The nearby village of Ochla has a skansen of rural architecture. >>>>


Zoo-safari - Świerkocin

     Poland's only private safari zoo which can be only visited by bus or by car. There are sections representing wildlife of Africa (zebras, ostriches, antelopes gnu and eland), India (antelopes garna and nilgau, axis deer) and Mongolia (Przewalski horses, yaks, bactrian camels). >>>>


Baroque palace - Żagań

     Located on the Bóbr River, Żagań has two outstanding historical monuments: a baroque palace surrounded by the most scenic park in Silesia, built in the 17th century for Albrecht von Wallenstein, and an Augustinian complex that includes a church with Gothic and baroque interiors, baroque convent with St Ann's chapel, a splendid library (13th c.), granary and a boarding school (now a hotel). >>>>



Ornithological reserve - Mouth of the Warta River National Park

     Where River Warta joins the Odra River, there is one of Europe's largest ornithological reserves. It offers shelter to 254 water and mud bird species of which 174 species have here their nesting grounds. During autumnal migrations, over 200,000 snow geese take rest on this area. >>>>
